Talent Discovery "Rongrong Du" an Illustrator

How did you first get into illustration?

I started drawing when I was 10 years old. My mom bought me my first fashion magazine, Vogue China, when I was 16. I was instantly mesmerized! I could not stop drawing the beautiful faces and garments from the magazine. That was my initial foray into the wonderful world of fashion illustration! I had no idea I could turn this into a career. I went to college in Shanghai and majored in graphic design. I spent my time there learning and practicing illustration. After graduation I worked as a concept designer for a game company but quickly realized I could not give up my dream to become a fashion illustrator, so I applied to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York to study fashion illustration.

How would you best describe your style of illustration?

My style varies depending on the theme and subject. In general, my style is fashion-focused, playful, fun and detailed.

What tools do you use for your work?

I mainly use pencil and watercolor. However, I experiment with lots of different media based on the projects. Right now I am working on my holiday project so I am using some metallic paints and glitters.

When illustrating, do you sometimes get short of ideas? If so, how do you overcome that?

That is for sure. I feel like when I push myself too hard or am too tired, I tend to get stuck. I will typically switch to a different project or take a break, watch a movie, go to the pool or take a dance class.

What would be your ultimate goal as an illustrator?

My goal (exactly same as 15 years ago) is to collaborate with the big fashion brands such as Dior, Channel and etc , as well as illustrate for fashion magazines like Vogue, Nylon, Cosmopolitan and etc.
